From letting your hair air dry to using chemical-free shampoo, check out your complete guide to healthy hair.
Brush your hair twice a day
Brushing is a requirement if you want healthy hair. It’s a good idea to brush your hair twice a day – once in the morning and once before bed. Brush for approximately one minute and be gentle. If you have a tangle, don’t aggressively run your brush through it, instead use a wide tooth comb and softly run it through your hair.
Get a trim every two months
If you want your hair to stay healthy, and especially if you want it to grow longer, you need to cut off the dead ends. On average, it takes about six to eight weeks for the ends of hair to become brittle and damaged. Once that happens, it can become dry and breakable. To keep your hair shiny, hair experts recommend getting a haircut every two months (every month for colour treated hair). Going to the hairdresser can be expensive, so if you’re just looking to trim your hair you can easily buy a pair of hair shears off Amazon and have a friend do it for you.
Try a weekly scalp treatment
A happy scalp means happy hair. Keeping the hair follicles clean at the roots is proven to prevent inflammation and blockage, which can both lead to the thinning of your hair later in life. A drugstore scalp treatment will do the trick as long as it contains salicylic acid, an ingredient that will do a better job of cleansing than your shampoo.
Wash your hair three times per week
Hair industry experts agree that when it comes to washing your hair, less is more. Your hair’s natural oils are designed to condition and protect the strands, thus when you wash your hair daily you’re effectively stripping your hair of these essential oils. You should aim to wash your hair a maximum of two to three times per week. If you hate the thought of unwashed locks, consider purchasing dry shampoo. It will help reduce the oiliness of your hair while ensuring your hair retains its volume.
Use chemical-free shampoo
It’s a sad reality, but the majority of drugstore hair products are rife with toxic chemicals. Nicknamed “the dirty dozen,” there are twelve chemicals in particular that you should try to avoid in your shampoos and conditioners. Parabens, parfum, sodium laureth sulfate, and DEA-related ingredients are just a few to avoid when shopping for cosmetics. Some of these chemicals are proven to have extremely harmful effects, such as increasing your risk of cancer.
Apply coconut oil to your hair
Coconut oil is a natural method of providing nourishment to your scalp. Even if your hair is naturally oily, it helps to apply a dime-sized amount of oil to the roots of your hair at least once per week. It will regulate the oiliness of your scalp and help coloured hair last longer. Plus, it smells fantastic!
Let your hair air dry
Now we know this isn’t always possible. After all, in the middle of winter you can’t leave the house with wet locks. But in those instances when you have the time, letting your hair air dry will do wonders. Blow drying, or any sort of heated treatment for that matter, will seriously dry out.
